Issue Description
When the Lilliputian, Kara, discovers that the humans she's heard about in tall-tales are more than just myth, she sets out to discover that the world is far larger than she ever imagined.
This is the first chapter of 7" Kara. It's 12 pages of lavish watercolor comic with pencil color accents for an early teen demographic. It was initially released as a soft-cover staple-bound book but is now published in a soft-cover perfect-bound volume.
This is Becca Hillburn's first watercolor comic. The main character, Kara, is used as branding for much of Becca Hillburn's work as it is her main body of work since graduating from SCAD: The University of Creative Careers, where she earned a Master of Fine Arts in sequential arts. This chapter was used as the comic pages to exemplify her thesis project, Effective Page Design and Its Effect on Readability in Children’s Comics.
Two cover variations for this issue were created, though not produced, to show potential alternate styles for the comic. That being, monochromatic inked, as well as an alcohol-based marker rendering. Examples of which exist on Becca Hillburn's art process blog, Keep On Truckin', Nattosoup.
Much of the wildlife and structures from this issue were referenced from personal photographs of Luling, LA. The town is in a relatively remote area in which much of the population is still superstitious and is sparely populated enough such that small people could go unnoticed.

Volume Description
Lilliputians are tiny people who occupy the in-between spaces of our world. Sometimes, if you're careful, you can catch a glimpse of one. 7" Kara is a suburban fantasy comic aimed at young girls. Inspired by books such as "The Borrowers", "The Littles", and "Gulliver's Travels", 7" Kara follows the adventures of the 11 year old Lilliputian Kara. Kara lives with her parents in an old doll house that's been hidden away in the back of a neglected shed. Isolated her entire life, she has few Lilliputian friends her own age, and even less experience with the outside world. Everything she knows has been learned first hand or has been taught to her by her parents. Her life changes drastically when a human family moves into the house her family lives near. Will Kara make a new friend? Or is there something darker, possibly more dangerous in store for her?
7" Kara is an ongoing watercolor children's comic written and illustrated by Becca Hillburn. Collected in this first volume are the first four chapters of the main comic, a bonus story featuring Kara, and a selection of concept art. Full color, 112 pages of content, 71 pages of comic.
